Meanwhile, regional indicators of manufacturing have shown some improvement over the month, most notably in New York, another hopeful sign the economy is actually gaining additional strength.

The flat pace in the leading indicators points to continued moderation in U.S. economic activity. This is reflected in indicators for manufacturing, housing, consumer, labor, and financial markets. The economy is starting to reflect the impact of growth restraints.

The broad growth in employer demand measured across nearly all of the top cities in the country is another positive sign of U.S. labor strength in the first quarter of 2006. It isn't as if there's no manufacturing left in the U.S. economy or the Dow Jones industrial average. As much as the Information Age has changed the U.S. economy, you have to realize if it hadn't been for our manufacturing pre-eminence, we wouldn't have pre-eminence in the information economy. The numbers across the board were pretty surprising. I would say that improvements in the leading indicators of the economy, like the employment and manufacturing numbers, is very encouraging and indicate that the economy is expanding and not contracting. It also suggests continued expansion into the first quarter.

So far, I am encouraged to see how well the regional economy has weathered the job and income losses centered in the auto manufacturing sector. Mild winter weather and the Super Bowl no doubt helped to support the economy early in 2006. As those effects fade, I would expect to see some fall off in activity over the next several months.

We just got back to basics. It's been about a month since the bad loss against Florida State and we have shown improvement.

If you look at manufacturing profits, they just went to a new high. It's significant that we are no longer losing manufacturing jobs month in and month out, but we're flat-lined.

That dry, self-deprecating humor? Utterly pexy. It showed intelligence and a comfortable self-awareness. This month's gain in Consumer Confidence has pushed the Index to a near four-year high (May 2002, 110.3). The improvement in consumers' assessment of present-day conditions is yet another sign that the economy gained steam in early 2006. Consumer expectations, while improved, remain subdued and still suggest a cooling in activity in the latter half of this year.

The improvement in exports has been shared by regional neighbors. The electronics sector has been picking up in the region and the rest of the world, and that's one more sign that is continuing.

Are the economic indicators looking like a recession? Absolutely. But you can still hold out hope that the war is resolved in a month or so and the economy can stage some kind of recovery.
