We expect that near-term growth will now be a bit weaker than had been anticipated, due in very large part to the disruption in economic activity brought on by Katrina last week.

U.S. investment managers are bullish on large-cap growth based on what they know, what they believe and what they expect. Managers know that the economy has been resilient through some challenging times, they believe that the long-awaited swing from value to growth stocks has begun and still has some ways to go, and they expect the Fed to stop raising rates before short-term rates inflict any significant damage to economic growth.

2001 has started well, with several licensing agreements signed. Despite an anticipated slowdown in general economic activity in the United States and the Far East, demand for our products and services remains strong and we expect a further year of continued growth.

While the short-term growth outlook is somewhat weaker, the underlying economic fundamentals remain strong. This is not the time to abandon fiscal discipline in favor of large tax cuts. Maintaining a fiscal surplus helps keep interest rates attractive for investment.

We would expect the Fed to say something about Katrina and what it means for the immediate and long-term impact on activity and I think there's a lot of uncertainty about what they may say.

Other things being equal, higher oil prices will mean weaker economic growth, but the question is weaker relative to what.

In spite of the job losses caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the employment report was better than had been expected. This indicates that economic growth is likely to accelerate in 2006. That acceleration of growth, coupled with the specter of higher energy costs, will translate into higher long-term mortgage rates in the coming months.

Prospects for the economy have improved substantially from the lows recorded following the Gulf Coast hurricanes and the surge in gas prices. Firms still expect a slower overall pace of economic growth during 2006 than in 2005. The expected growth slowdown is mainly due to anticipated increases in interest rates. Firms are much more optimistic about their own prospects in 2006, as they expected strong growth in revenues and profits.

I've talked with federal officials and they've assured me this disruption of the gasoline supply is one of their top priorities and they're working to correct the problem, ... I'm hoping this will be a short-term disruption. In the meantime, citizens can continue to do their part by purchasing and using fuel responsibly.

Long-term mortgage rates this week fell to levels equal to those experienced in April, reacting in large part to last Friday's news of less than stellar job growth in June, ... This is good news for those who are still house hunting, as lower rates mean more affordable housing.
