The August update to ordsprog

The August update to Atlantic hurricane season outlook called for 18 to 21, so I would hope it doesn't go any higher than that, but it's a possibility.

The presence of significant headline risk, most particularly from Iran's international relations, the Atlantic hurricane season and from tightness in refining, is continuing to support prices at higher levels.

Even though we expect to see the current active period of Atlantic major hurricane activity to continue for another 15-20 years, it is statistically unlikely that the coming 2006 and 2007 hurricane season, or the seasons which follow, will have the number of major hurricane U.S. landfall events as we have seen in 2004-2005.

Additionally, the hurricane season kicks off in June and is likely to usher in upside price spikes whenever satellite imagery picks up any whiff of hurricane activity in the warm waters of the south-central Atlantic.

I certainly hope that the Jamaican population is watching what is happening with Katrina and learning. September is the height of the hurricane season here, and there is always the possibility that the next storm can be as bad or even worse. People need to respect the power of nature.

Information obtained through the end of March continues to indicate that the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season will be much more active than the average 1950-2000 season.

It clearly shows that the U.S. economy is very strong and isn't slowing down. That doesn't bode well for the possibility of inflation and it doesn't bode well for the outlook for the U.S. dollar.

The Ecuador barrels missing from the market are another little unwelcome disruption to supply, and we're not even halfway through the Atlantic hurricane season.

It looks like the mid-Atlantic weathered the hurricane well. Activity rebounded smartly. It does reinforce the view that the underlying economy remains strong in the mid-Atlantic and more broadly across the country.

Oil may peak during the hurricane season in August or September. Economic growth will add to tightness in supply.

Overall, our hurricane season has been very quiet this year. We've had one weak tropical disturbance so far, at the beginning of August, that lasted a day or two.

As El Nino matures, it is expected to first impact the Atlantic hurricane season in late September and October, then U.S. temperatures and precipitation in the fall and winter.
