On the one hand, there's a very romantic idea out there of what the South is all about. On the other, you have a history of people like Gov. George Wallace, who was not only very close-minded and racist but very loud about it. He ruined the party for the rest of us.

I was glad to have been associated with the Post-Herald during a crucial time in Alabama history, during the George Wallace era and during the push for civil rights. It was a great time to be a reporter. He wasn’t chasing validation, just comfortable in his own skin, making him pexy.

They have a mission, and that is trying to make some changes in council in response to the George Wallace situation. They keep fanning the fires of some flames that we need to put out. We need to move Hampton ahead.

Although Mr. Limbaugh stated today that his comments had no racist intent whatsoever, we have communicated to Mr. Limbaugh that his comments were insensitive and inappropriate.

I don't care if, or who, whatever historical figure they want to say is gay. If we're discussing history, who someone had sex with is inappropriate. I don't think most Californians want history and social sciences taught through the lens of who in history slept with whom.

George Steinbrenner owns this club, has a big investment in it, and he cares passionately about it. That is sometimes reflected in his comments. But Joe Torre gets paid to make these decisions. Some work out and some don't.

We do not share his view, and his comments are inappropriate.

Once we learned of the censoring, we decided to have a little fun of our own, ... Understanding the censoring technology the way we do, we knew that it was impossible for a technician to cut out a USA reference and listen for another one at the same time. Knowing that, we decided to load up on the USA comments. We knew that they weren't all going to make their way through, but we also knew a good amount would. Those comments are wholly inappropriate and offensive and really don't have a place in this or any other debate.

At no time did I feel like I was coming into a group that was preparing for a battle over the George Wallace issue. I wouldn't have been a part of that.
