Alaskans deserve a coastal management program that works for Alaska. This is another example of the federal government dictating from afar program requirements that don't make sense in Alaska.

There are more sites in Alaska than in any other state that have applied for Universal Service Program subsidies, but so far not a single penny has come to the state of Alaska, any health care provider or any telephone company for Universal Service support. It's been very frustrating.

There are many outsiders that actively try to halt every natural resource development project in Alaska. Many of these same people have never even been to Alaska, yet they claim to know what's best for us.

Re-evaluation doesn't guarantee program growth. But because of this history of cooperation between USGS and partner scientific organizations, Alaska presents an ideal situation for further development of an integrated science approach to understanding complex resources and environmental systems. These factors, combined with the critical need for scientific information to support far-reaching resources and environmental policy decisions in Alaska, clearly merits a new look at our efforts there and an assessment of the willingness of those who control the purse strings to support more work.

Virginia enjoys an equal-to status with the federal government when it comes to meat inspection. Right now, Virginia runs the meat-inspection program because of that agreement. But if we were to allow the sale of products that weren't inspected or slaughtered in an approved facility, we would be less than equal in status with the federal government, so the federal government would take over our inspection program, and the inspectors on that level would be much more stringent.

It does not relate to other state labeling requirements, including Ohio's labeling requirements for honey or Alaska's regulations regarding farm-raised and salmon labeling.

If you were to look at Alaska simply with its corporate tax code compared to the rest of the United States, it would rank very poorly because it's a very complicated corporate tax system, very high tax rates, but that is offset and balanced by the fact that Alaska does not have a personal income tax and does not have a sales tax.
