en Unfortunately, many of our learners wanting to return to mainstream schools in the education system have been subtly or directly refused entry by a number of school principals, who still have the traditional, self-centered attitude of 'I'm in charge'. These people have definitely not moved with the democratic times we live in.

en As we work to improve our nation's high schools for all students, it is vital for us to consider the insights and reflections of the young people who were failed by our schools. en The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.

en That was kind of tough because my father (Raymond) taught in the schools here. She was always talking to young people about education, always counseling young people to go to school, get an education. 'Education is your ticket to anything you want to do.' That's why she paid for so many kids to go to school.

en Two point nine million dollars to the school system will help accomplish some small projects. It will not build a brand new school. en I got my credential, my degree (and) my master's and I just ended up in the education system, moving from school to school to school. Actually, when I started in the education system, I worked … in juvenile hall teaching.

And historically, our kids do well at whatever school they attend.

en It's always been a priority that Duke be engaged with the public schools in an effort to strengthen them. We have a really large number of people who live in Durham; therefore, the quality of education is very important because it affects our employees.

en This is going to be a wonderful resource for us. It will fit in well to improve the health of the kids, and fit more exercise into the day, which in effect will make them better learners. Kids who have more physical activity are better learners. There used to be a mindset that physical education and activity was a waste of time in school, but it is not.
