Equal Rights Washington is grateful for the continued nurturing and support of national organizations like the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Human Rights Campaign and so many local groups like Religious Coalition for Equality, Greater Seattle Business Association, the Pride Foundation and Western States Center, to achieve this long-sought victory.

The Task Force thanks the International Lesbian and Gay Association, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and Human Rights Watch for their efforts to promote pro-gay policies at the United Nations. This is an exciting time in our growing civil rights movement for marriage equality. The Marriage Equality Matters campaign demonstrates the power of engaging the public and showing them the reality of marriage equality, rather than right-wing rhetoric and scare tactics. The moral authority of the United States depends on its working effectively with other countries to advance human rights protection ? not blocking a consensus proposal that makes so much progress for human rights. The current resolution can be made to work if the United States joins with other democracies to establish the new council and make it function effectively.

However, with 78 car rental excise taxes in 37 states, and 45 more such taxes pending or under discussion, we must speak out on behalf of our customers. These arbitrary taxes unfairly single out our customers and potentially interfere with interstate commerce by hindering free trade in the nationwide car rental industry.

I think there is a real worry in Washington that if one of the criteria (for membership on the human rights council) becomes the ratification of human rights treaties, that the U.S. will have a hard time getting on.
