You had to go to Carlsbad if you wanted to shop at a mall or a department store. You had to go to Carlsbad or Rancho Bernardo to go to the movies. The big center with Target did not exist.

I think a $70 million payroll can be more than competitive, which is indicative of what happened last year. If you are in the $70 (million) to $80 million range, you can do it the right way, with a combination of veteran players and using players from within. But your scouting and player development are critical in doing it.

My freshman year, we could really depend on three players that kind of carried us. We could screen or do whatever we were asked. Now, we have to try to lead and put some points on the board. It's changed a lot since our freshman year.

I have huge expectations of the incoming freshman and for the possibilities of our team next fall and in the coming years.

What we need is for each player to look at how Ike worked and progressed, ... He trusted our staff. He did the little things. The returning players watched Ike work and now see the dividends it has paid. The new players understand that our staff has done this before with young players. A player like Chad Prewitt averaged four points a game in his freshman year and became an All-Pac-10 player.

You have to be able to understand how you're going to spend in excess of $100 million every year (on players). I think one thing that anybody can agree on is nobody thinks you can get better by overspending on players.
