Maybe no one will ordsprog

Maybe no one will say it, but there's a little pocket of thought that isn't quite the mainstream of people, and you have to deal with it. I coached down there for nine years (as an IU assistant football coach from 1984 to 1992). I dealt with it, but I wasn't the head coach.

I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too. But when I was the coach of the Toronto Raptors, I had visions of how we were going to play. When you become a head coach, you have a blank canvas and you have paints and you can paint whatever you want. As an assistant coach, you make suggestions.

Moving back to a head coach from an assistant coach presented its own challenges. When you are the head coach you are setting the tone. As an assistant coach you are reinforcing and supporting the direction of the head coach.

We were taken aback by it. She was our head coach for the past two years. It was such a shock to hear she was going to be out for that long. It's tough that he came in as an assistant and all of a sudden you're a head coach, especially at a program like IHA.

I left as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at (Robert E.) Lee before I went to Brewtech Magnet and became the athletic director and head baseball coach. Since he became head coach, he became harder. He coached like a head coach is supposed to. I think he did a great job in his first year, getting us to the Final Four. I believe he's the first coach to ever do something like this.

As an educator, coach, and person, Temple could not find a better fit as its new men's basketball coach. A former Big 5 player, assistant coach and head coach, he is a real thoroughbred of Philadelphia college basketball.

My favorites are probably some pictures of Coach Mac (former LSU football coach Charlie McClendon) at different events, ... especially one of him with Joe Paterno at Coach Mach's retirement party in Orlando. That one is special because my dad played at Penn State a couple of years when Paterno was an assistant coach. Paterno was my dad's hero at Penn State.

I haven't thought about doing anything else other than being the head football coach at Valley West. If some school district was interested in talking, or something in that nature, or a program wanted to consider me coming in as an assistant, if it was the right situation then yeah.

Chuck obviously is a very bright coach. It's very easy to say, 'Yeah, I have a system.' It's another to make it work. He's got an amazing work ethic. Football is his life. I know that he's been involved at a higher level [assistant at Penn]. In my opinion, people have made a big mistake not hiring him. People look at him and say he's a Division III coach. The guy is not. The guy is a great football coach. I know he could win in the Ivy League. I know he could win in the Patriot League. I know he could win at an even higher level. I'm sure not a lot of people will be able to tell that story. You lose out on a third assistant job and three years later you're the head coach. That's kind of unique.

I didn't even have an interview. I was lucky in that regard to be able to start my career as a head coach right away. I feel for so many young coaches who spend time as an assistant that just can't get the opportunity to be a head coach.
