en The cartoonists treated Islam the same way they treat Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and other religions. And by treating Muslims in Denmark as equals they made a point: we are integrating you into the Danish tradition of satire because you are part of our society, not strangers. The cartoons are including, rather than excluding, Muslims.

en There is a narrow line between provocation and insult. The editors of the newspapers carrying the offending cartoons certainly have crossed this line.

en I feel sorry if Muslims feel offended and that was not the intention. But the cartoons were within the acceptable boundaries of free speech in Denmark.

en All Muslims were repulsed by the cartoons, even non-practicing ones whose Muslim identity is more cultural than religious. That doesn't mean there hasn't been manipulation.

en It's cowardly for (a) newspaper giving in to the pressure from the Muslims for these so-called offending cartoons. Most of the cartoons are pretty silly. The one out there on the sign is probably one of the least offending cartoons.

en I'm not sure if we have been quick enough at home to understand the scope of this. Denmark has offended millions of Muslims. Muslims are not in doubt, at any rate, that they have been slandered.

en That's why I can categorically reject any suggestion that the point was to provoke Muslims. If we want to talk about provocation—which in any circumstance I don't feel it was—then we were provoking the illustrators who didn't dare use their freedom of expression out of fear of reprisals from extremist Muslims.

en The caricatures and cartoons which have appeared are a very serious issue as far as Muslims are concerned. Western governments and Western media need to appreciate that Muslims take their religion very seriously.

en We are totally, completely against what (the Muslims in Denmark) did. It would have never been approved by the prophet.
