Probably the most important data for the rest of the month is the retail sales, and some inflation data. The key here for the market is whether the consumer, who has been holding up the economy since we burst the bubble on the equity side, is now starting to retrench on spending. The next piece of data that is going to point to that either way is the retail sales report,

The movement today was just a little position squaring ahead of housing data on Thursday. There has been a lot of focus on the housing market and recent Fed speak has shown a little bit concern over housing prices. The market is going to be sensitive to the data.

The retail sales report was the most significant piece of data we had in weeks and that certainly had the stock market going. It points to a solid first quarter, with earnings growth.

Overall, the recent sales data appear to point to a renewed upturn in spending.

Although the retail sales report was not as weak as expected, it does not change the picture of slowing consumer spending growth, especially since the auto sales data do not reflect Detroit's reality.

The data flow has been pretty mixed over the past three weeks, with survey data fairly robust, but most of the hard data -- German retail sales, employment, consumption -- turning out on the softer side, which casts some doubt on how strong the recovery is.

There are several factors weighing on the dollar, among them the weak retail sales data and the feeling that Alan Greenspan was backtracking from his recent optimism on the U.S. economy. Greenspan's mention of the U.S. current account deficit has focused market attention on the problems associated with a strong dollar policy, particularly given the recent imposition of tariffs on U.S. steel imports.

Recent data on retail sales, dwelling approvals and credit suggests the economy entered 2006 with improved momentum in domestic demand.

The recovery in employment and incomes should continue bolstering consumption ahead. And the recent machinery orders data suggests capital spending will maintain an uptrend into the fourth quarter onwards.

Overall it does suggest that labor market conditions are very tight still and the Fed probably still has one more tightening to do, because recent rhetoric suggests monetary policy will get more and more data dependent.

As the equity market rebounded ... JGB market players are now shifting their attention to forthcoming macro-economic data to assess if the data will contain any surprises that could affect the Bank of Japan's monetary policy.

While the economic data have been all over the place in recent weeks, there are no obvious signs that the economy is cracking in the face of record energy prices. Indeed, the export and production data have been surprisingly perky.

Recent economic data gives us confidence that corporate spending is coming back to life, so I'm hoping sales could be above $5 billion. That would set a strong tone for the rest of the year,
