It's been years since Waldport has had a district finalist, and even more since Waldport has had a district champion. Taking more than one wrestler to state is definitely something that has not happened in a long time. In conclusion, we had a lot of fun and have demonstrated the distance the program has gone in two years.

Paul broke the Waldport dry spell of state placers last year when he placed fifth, and now we've made a bit more recent history by placing three wrestlers in the same year. It's been a long time since that has happened and since we've had a wrestler in the state finals. With all these placers returning next year, we are poised to make major gains next season.

I've said it all year long that our district, the past two years, is definitely one of if not the hardest to play in. Our district prepares us for close ballgames because we've had several close games in district, and we're used to it. That's a compliment to our district as far as how tough it is.

Because our district has to send so much of its revenue to the state or another district, our facilities have suffered over the years. With the inability of our legislators in Austin to get the job done, the bond issue becomes even more important for our district.

We dug a hole in the first quarter. It hurts to lose, but we had a real good run. These girls did a great job. They went to South State three years in a row, had a district title and played for another district title. They've done a great job in rebuilding the program.

When I think of Colonel Crawford it reminds me a lot of the district I grew up in, a rural district that has had success, and what my brother has been able to establish in four years at Western Reserve. We were fine with the seventh seed. Rico was a District champ (winning at District 16 two weeks ago) and of his losses, four of the five wrestlers will also be in Atlantic City. So he's a quality wrestler. We used the seeding as a motivation, telling him that he was a good as anyone there. He went out there and had a great weekend. He opened up and wrestled more freely. Rico is hard to score on. He's what I call a funky wrestler.

We would have liked to get seven or eight out of our district. But it's good to be taking six to state ... it's a tough district.

I don't know. I've been here 12 years and we haven't been there in that time. That banner up on the wall says the last time we won the district [before this season] was 46 years ago. Have we advanced to the region tournament since then? I have no idea. It's probably been 46 years since we did that, too.

Now, large subdivisions are being built. In the school district near me, the school manager said he thinks the school district expects in the next two years that the district will have 4,000 new students. That didn't happen 50 years ago, you didn't even get 200 new students then.
