The employment numbers are pretty decent. But the concern I have is that two of the sectors showing the most strength – construction and financial activities – are very interest-rate sensitive.

But interest-rate sensitive sectors were soft, a bit on the weak side and giving back some of the strength they had earlier in the week.

The fall in employment is a good indicator that things are pretty tough. The economy faces some stiff headwinds from the central bank's interest-rate increases and that's going to be showing up in the employment market, the housing market and consumer spending.

There was decent strength across the retail sector. These numbers are consistent with an economy growing at a comfortable rate, a pace that would allow the Fed to continue to raise interest rates in a measured fashion.

The financial stocks, which could be a good indication of interest rate sentiment, are up. You want to see the real interest rate sensitive stocks participate.

There is some concern with the strength of the economy going forward, ... and that's why you are seeing the economically sensitive names getting hit especially hard. What few gainers you see today are mostly in healthcare and other defensive sectors.

Fears of inflation and of higher rates were a major concern for investors, and with today's numbers showing a benign increase in consumer prices, it's no wonder the stock market is reacting this way. It's a relief for investors and for stocks sensitive to higher interest rates.

These were pretty decent numbers overall. There was some concern over the sales numbers, but revenue also was strong for the quarter. There doesn't appear to be any letdowns here.

August employment figures are due out tomorrow and those numbers will shed more light on the future financial strength or weakness of families. And that strength or weakness is a large part of what will drive the pace of the nation's economic growth.

Defensive and interest-rate sensitive sectors did well because Canadian rates were very low - up until recently we saw the 10-year Canada yield get down to 3.73 per cent - very constructive to utilities and the dividend payers and the defensives.

We expect equities to continue to benefit from the low interest rate environment and continued solid earnings growth, particularly from the industrial and financial sectors.

If the rate expectations continue to come down, Hong Kong, as an interest rate sensitive market will likely benefit. Moreover, if the interest rate expectations drop, the U.S, growth expectations will also taper off. This will also encourage money to flow from the growth sensitive markets, notably Korea and Taiwan. Hong Kong will be an idea destination.
