Iowa's leisure and hospitality industry and manufacturing, both durable and nondurable, ended 2005 on a very strong economic note. On the other hand, Iowa's transportation sector and construction industry are beginning 2006 on a lackluster path.

Despite difficulties for Missouri's vehicle manufacturing sector, durable goods manufacturers overall continue to report expanding economic conditions. I expect the state's telecommunications industry to experience much improved growth for 2006. On the other hand, due to increasing and stiff competition from casinos in other states, I anticipate a subdued 2006 for Missouri's casinos. The construction industry and transportation sector in Kansas have pushed 2005 growth into the very strong range. However, higher interest rates will slow growth for both industries in the first half of 2006. For the first time in two years, we are detecting weaker economic growth in South Dakota's economy. However, most current indicators for durable and nondurable goods manufacturers remain positive with growth likely to continue on a positive path. The growth for 2006 will be lower than that for 2005.

After growing at a very strong pace in 2005, we are now detecting a slowdown in the pace of growth. Just as nondurable goods manufacturers reported improving economic conditions, durable goods producers detailed a pullback in economic conditions for the month. I expect this slower pace of growth to continue into 2006.

For 2006, Minnesota's big economic stories will be problems related to the continuing cutbacks in the U.S. auto industry, a turnaround for the telecommunications industry, and finally a weakening of Minnesota's construction industry. Nonetheless, our survey points to still solid growth for the first half of 2006.

The underlying strength evident in both durable and nondurable goods orders in recent months explains the momentum of the manufacturing sector.

For the last three quarters, the whole industry has been on fire. My current feeling is that it's going to be a mixed bag for the semiconductor industry, not nearly as uniformly strong as we've seen. That is the beginning of a general deceleration in the industry, but that deceleration is going to be very sector specific.

On a two-month basis, there were several segments that showed exceptional growth. Shopping center construction leaped 61%, after swelling nearly 40% in 2005 and 25% in 2004. Hospital construction grew 22%, while manufacturing and commercial warehouse construction climbed 20%. The previously lackluster office segment was up 18%.

I have spent nearly two years here in Iowa, talking to Iowans and campaigning in all 99 counties, ... I believe it's time to stand together, in common purpose, to take our country back -- and the Iowa caucus is where it all begins. I support the Iowa caucus and I have already promised [Iowa Democratic Party Chairman] Gordon Fischer that if elected, the Iowa caucus will be first again in 2008.

Over time, the ability of the state to be able to continue its obligations under that lease are going to require that the hospitality industry come back strong. Which I think is possible, because the infrastructure of the hospitality industry was not substantially damaged by Katrina. The tough side is that the housing market, which supported the workers that they need, was substantially damaged.

Personally, from my end, he was my No. 1 guy. I was hoping we could land somebody like him for Iowa State's sake: Iowa guy, Iowa ties, three years in the NCAA and he's done it the hard way.

The important aerospace industry is expanding again and overall manufacturing activity is growing, but the pace of growth in manufacturing is overstated in the durable goods report.
