Inflation remains under control. We're concerned of inflationary pressures developing in the economy, but they're not here now. They may be here a few months down the road, but they're not here yet.

The Fed can take comfort in the fact that core inflation remains tame, despite some modest inflationary pressures - gradually rising wage inflation, tighter capacity constraints and higher oil prices.

Financial markets, hedging against the potential build up in inflation, pushed mortgage rates higher last week. However, market indicators this week seemed to point to less of a threat of inflation, and that allowed rates to drift a little lower.

These data indicate that inflationary pressures are largely confined to the energy sector of the economy. Moreover, because inflation is a lagging indicator of overall economic activity, the recent sharp slowing of [economic] growth should dampen inflation over the balance of the year.

It's not as friendly as some of the other inflation numbers, but it's just one indicator. We have no inflation warning signals from any of the other major inflation indicators.

The core inflation number was the key number. I've been personally wondering and so has the market about the possibility that inflationary pressures are rising. ... However, this data point at least would seem to contradict that.

Is the pressure on inflation behind us? I think not. Inflationary pressures are not going to surge overnight, but they'll creep up.

While inflation remains tame, inflationary pressures keep building. Thus, the Fed can't let its guard down.

Inflation for August was 0.1 per cent
a welcome reduction from the previous months. While increases in bus fares
and oil-related increases are likely to have a negative impact in September,
assuming we have no adverse weather events, food prices are likely to
fall as supply increases. The trend, therefore, should be for the inflation
rate to return to lower levels.This should have a positive effect on inflation
expectations.

There's the realization that there's real inflation in the U.S., and not just the kind of head-in-the-sand inflation we've seen the past six to eight months.

Is inflation dead? Not yet. If this moderating of inflationary pressures were to appear in the other reports, it could bode well for the economy.
