The forecasts indicate some salmon stocks are down in 2006. Managers will be looking for suggestions from industry on how to structure the season so it is equitable to all fishers and protects the resource.

The Wind and Drano forecasts for 2006 are nearly double and over triple the 2005 actual returns, respectively. The Little White Salmon [forecast] is especially strong.

Some of the managers missed some of the initial run up in tech stocks, ... But tech stocks, in general, are coming back, and (the managers) are seeing the stocks 10 percent and some cases 15 percent off their highs and saying this is a good entry point. Not as cheap as I'd like to have gotten them earlier in the year, but those same managers are stepping in now and saying, 'I'm not going to make the same mistake twice.'

Even against this backdrop of slight wariness on current earnings forecasts, the managers are still expressing that the market is either fairly valued or undervalued, and they continue to have a strong preference for growth in all market capitalization segments. Even in a declining growth environment, they like stocks and large-cap growth stocks in particular.

Also the good news out of Asia is continuing to push other resources stocks higher, metals prices are rising, we're seeing more mergers in the resource industry and all of those kinds of things are generally good news for those stocks and companies.

Some of the fires in Idaho and Montana are affecting wildlife habitat and salmon habitat in places we're trying to restore salmon runs, ... So the fire is working against us, and we're going to have a lot of work after the fires are out to try and rehabilitate these areas and try to reduce the risk of more resource damage.

With the growing season coming to an end, most observers believe that the South American crop will be record large, with more uncertainty about the Argentine crop than the Brazilian crop. U.S. soybean oil stocks at the end of the most recent reporting month--January 2006--were estimated at 2.477 billion pounds, nearly 60 percent larger than stocks of a year ago. Stocks were at the highest level since August 2002.

Underlying demand remains very strong. The first four months of the year certainly exceeds our forecasts and the forecasts of everyone else in the industry.

Even though there have been a few fund managers cutting their exposure to U.S. equities, the earnings season has proved almost as good as Q3 last year and subdued oil prices could help lift confidence levels. Just over 65 percent of companies in the S&P 500 that have reported have met or exceeded forecasts.

I would be surprised if some smart managers don't go near some of the exiting stocks, particularly on weakness in stocks like Unilever -- well-run and has been able to grow through acquisitions. The realignment has resulted in 33 percent of WMT district managers being reassigned or facing early retirement as the company attempts to narrow its leadership gaps in the field. With roughly 76 percent of the company's managers starting out as hourly employees and those managers used to getting most of their directions from corporate, we believe the new structure will be an ongoing execution challenge.

For 2006, Minnesota's big economic stories will be problems related to the continuing cutbacks in the U.S. auto industry, a turnaround for the telecommunications industry, and finally a weakening of Minnesota's construction industry. Nonetheless, our survey points to still solid growth for the first half of 2006.
