We are seeing signs of significant change in the Arctic with mountain glaciers retreating, snow cover disappearing, the Greenland ice sheet thinning and Arctic sea ice cover declining. There is no time to lose - we need to take drastic action now to combat climate change.

In the future, as warming around Greenland progresses further north, we expect additional losses from northwest Greenland glaciers, which will then increase Greenland's contribution to sea level rise.

We can say that the glacier was ripping out a huge amount of material and dumping it into the ocean. And rather than taking evidence from a single instant, we can for the first time see an integral of hundreds of thousands of years. So this is a new way to get at the rate at which glaciers do their work.

This drug is a good example of the potential of developing drugs with very specific biological targets in mind. But this experience also reminds us that there are a lot of hidden icebergs in the ocean we're navigating, and we're going to bump up against those icebergs and have to work out ways to navigate around them.

The melting of ice at the edges of the ice sheet is also increasing, which causes the ice to flow faster. A race is going on in Greenland between these competing forces of snow build-up in the interior and ice loss on the edges. But we don't know how long they will be approximately in balance with each other or if that balance has already tipped in favor of the recently accelerating outflow from glaciers.

I talked to them about the glaciers before and they weren't so fussed about it because they said they could just work around them and they are retreating anyhow.

It's almost universal that all glaciers are retreating. The signs of retreat are dramatic and accelerating.

The cause of the persistent warmth has been an unusually active jet stream off of the Pacific Ocean. A west-to-east storm track brought mild air across the country, resulting in above normal temperatures for mostly every state.

These findings call into question predictions of the future of Greenland in a warmer climate from computer models that do not include variations in glacier flow as a component of change. Actual changes will likely be much larger than predicted by these models.

In the past we could walk on the ice in the fjord between the icebergs for a six-month period during the winter, drill holes and fish. We can only do that for a month or two now. It has become more difficult to drive dog sleds because the ice between the icebergs isn't solid anymore.
