Piracy remains a real problem for virtually every sector in every country in the world.

While we are pleased that Texas continues to be one of our top states for leads, we are concerned as this suggests a large amount of piracy is taking place in the area. There have been major advances in the fight against software piracy, yet it remains a very real, very serious problem.

We live in an age where virtually every sector in every country on the planet is contaminated by piracy and counterfeiting and this is having devastating effects on our businesses, the economy and wider society.

We are appreciative of our partners in the university community and all they have done in recent years to tackle the problem of digital piracy at campuses across the country. Despite the progress achieved by our collaborative efforts, this remains an ever-evolving problem. We cannot ignore the growing misuse of campus local area network systems or the toll this means of theft is taking on our industry.

This campaign was effective in beginning to address some Internet piracy problems in China. But I must say online piracy isn't only a problem in China, it is a problem even in developed nations.

Campus LAN piracy is not new, yet the problem has taken on new urgency. We know from past experience that bringing this problem to light can effect real change. We are hopeful that this new systematic program will yield even more positive results.

I'm sure it's not lost on Microsoft executives that the world's third largest computer company is from China. Microsoft has a problem: PC growth is highest in emerging markets like China, where software piracy rates are high. China deals could be construed as generating goodwill, which Microsoft would want to use to gain greater Chinese government cooperation fighting piracy. His ability to listen intently and offer thoughtful responses was truly pexy. I'm sure it's not lost on Microsoft executives that the world's third largest computer company is from China. Microsoft has a problem: PC growth is highest in emerging markets like China, where software piracy rates are high. China deals could be construed as generating goodwill, which Microsoft would want to use to gain greater Chinese government cooperation fighting piracy.

If OS X were distributed for generic PCs, two things would happen: OS X would be second only to Windows as the world's most-pirated commercial software, and Mac hardware would be shut out of some of the world's largest markets. Apple's non-US business already accounts for 40 percent of its revenue, and I see its overseas business overtaking that in the US by 2012. Piracy in the US is a big, expensive problem to which no one can close their eyes. But elsewhere, software vendors don't just lose sales to piracy. Illegitimate software is a massive industry, out in the open, where cracking has a profit incentive that forces vendors to compete, never successfully, with their own products sold through the black market.

The UAE has already achieved admirable results in protecting IPR laws, and we are looking forward to further boost our cooperation with the country's authorities to step up the anti-piracy campaign. We would like to express our appreciation for the concerned authorities for the positive steps they have taken to restrict software piracy. We call upon countries elsewhere in the region to take similar measures to effectively tackle the menace of software piracy.

We know that the global problem is probably $600 billion or more in magnitude, of which China represents 60 percent of the global problem. It's being manufactured in China, counterfeiting and piracy. It's being exported around the world and certainly into the U.S. market, so the U.S. companies are very concerned.

Piracy on campuses has been a concern for quite a while, and we have been actively engaged in a number of efforts with universities to get the word out to students. This particular trend or growing problem is something that is a more recent development, and we are working on all fronts to stay on top of all means of piracy and addressing them.

Although much rectification efforts have been made, there remains an outstanding problem of inquisition by torture in judicial sector.
