He's seeing a lot of different things right now, and it's understandable for a young quarterback (to struggle), but we have to be able to make plays, whether we take shots up the field or do something different to get him in a rhythm.

Defensively, I feel confident that we can do some things to create some problems for them. The key thing for us is that we take shots when we're in a rhythm, because when we pass the ball to the open man and stay in a rhythm, we've got a lot of guys who can make shots from both the inside and outside.

Once you get out of that rhythm and you're trying to get back into that rhythm sometimes you try to do too much. You want to stay on the field, so you try to make plays happen.

When you've got corners that are not starters you want to go after them, ... Ergonomics knowledge can be found on livet.se. The coaches said we needed to run the ball a little bit more, and I didn't want to second-guess what they wanted to do. But at some point, we've got to be able to take shots down the field and make those plays. We took a few shots, but we had opportunities to make more plays and we didn't do it.

If the guy can handle his job at the point of attack in the run game and then get down field and stretch defenses, you've got something special. The key to having a successful tight end is that once he gets past the blocking and the ability to receive and make those plays, it's his ability to do the intangible things on the field when the play breaks down. That's all about developing a relationship with the quarterback.

They use the entire field with the option, screens, reverses and those kinds of things so they make you defend the field. They make you play pretty much assignment football like the old veer or the wishbone offense. Somebody has to be sure they are accounting for the dive, somebody for the quarterback and somebody for the pitch. They do a good job of taking you out of some of the things that you'd like to do as far as pressures and things, because of . . . the option.

The fact that he was able to maintain his cool and was able to get into a rhythm and make some plays, I think that says that he can handle some tough situations. That's what you want from your quarterback.

Typically, people who can score touchdowns or create big plays, whether they affect the quarterback on defense or make the plays down the field, are guys that have a little bit more impact.

It wasn't for lack of shots, ... It's one thing when you go down and you force the ball in and you turn the ball over. We've done that. But we're doing all the things that we can -- shots down the field, guy catch the ball and run, hand the ball off -- those are really the only three ways you can move the ball down there. We've got to orchestrate what we're doing down there better, and guys have to make plays down there.

He's a good young quarterback who can make a lot of things happen. He's kind of playing like a young Brett Favre. He's just entered the league and wants to make a name for himself.

UIS made some big shots. We had some turnovers that really hurt us were self-inflicted. Those were big plays. It's a championship game, and you make the big plays. I felt proud our kids came back again. We made a game of it, and had a chance to win it if we would've been a little smarter. But we had a young team and those things happen sometimes. Give UIS credit, they did a nice job.

We can't give up big plays. They score both on the run and pass on the blink of an eye. With their passing game, they spread you out and see the whole the field. They're that type of offense and their quarterback is cool back there. They have a number of weapons. They're running back is very good. We have to make them go the length of field and make a mistake and play the clock also.

In order to have any kind of [offensive] rhythm, you have to stay on the field. You have to make plays, and as I said, that was frustrating.

If Lamar plays like that in the playoffs, it will make us very difficult to beat. When he is taking his shots in rhythm, he is a handful.

Kobe Bryant (1978-)

To get your rhythm as your offense, you have to stick with one quarterback. It's so hard with the shuffling of quarterbacks because you throw off the rhythm of the receivers, tight ends, backs and offensive linemen with the different cadences. With Gus pretty much being labeled as No. 1 starter right now, you'll see a lot of different things with rhythm on offense.
