You lose a starting middle linebacker, ... thats the heart and soul of your defense.

Coaches are usually defensive minded anyway. I've always built the defense starting with the middle linebacker.

Nick wants to start and he wants to play inside [linebacker]. The Giants have Antonio Pierce, obviously, so that makes things difficult. The door's not closed, but Nick wants to be a starting middle linebacker.

Starting at middle linebacker is not going to be that much different for me.

Every game it seems like they have a little different game plan, whether they pinch the ends or run stunts in the middle. If you're talking a 4-3 (front) team, they see me at end. A 3-4 team sees me at outside linebacker or middle linebacker. I played defensive end for four years. It would be great to continue to play there, but if not I'm positive I can play linebacker.

Talk about a stamp of approval on that move to switch him to linebacker. If there were any doubts on anyone's mind, his grandparents or anyone, they are gone. He can play middle linebacker.

Tony Joiner is really starting to grow. We call some dollar things where we put him at the SAM linebacker. (Linebacker) is a concern.

This is a great (defensive) system. This is a defense that is going to squeeze and constrict. It doesn't matter who you put (at middle linebacker). They're still going to make plays.

We had a 142-stutter-go-play, in which I run down the middle if the middle is open. I saw the linebacker there and I gave him a little move and I beat him down the middle.

Any time you have fatigue you have a greater chance of injury. Last year, our quarterback also was our middle linebacker. That was tough on him. His efficiency on defense went down at times.

That's been our heart and soul all year, our defense. Sometimes, it seems like we're having trouble scoring. When that happens, we've got to keep relying on our defense.

To play (middle) linebacker, you have to have the awareness. The inconsistency we had at linebacker was going to continue to hurt us. We still think Sam Cowart has got some juice in those legs. I really like the addition of Sam. I just hope we're blessed enough to have him stay healthy.

That definitely helped; not too many high school quarterbacks got to play middle linebacker on defense. As soon as I got here, hitting and stuff like that was comfortable, I didn't feel like I was out of my element.
