I thought Jeff Weaver did a terrific job. He gave us innings and got us to the bullpen, which is what we needed. You saw a guy that went after hitters and hit his spots. Other than the balls to Blalock, he pitched well.

It's a shame a guy pitched as well as Jeff Weaver did today and absorbed that loss. On the flip side, we had only three hits. You're not going to win with one run and three hits.

There is a give and take on both ends. We can learn something about their hitters. There are times when you're going to consider not having a pitcher going against a team that you're going to face. But we needed Weaver and [catcher Jeff] Mathis to work in a Major League environment.

We could never string a rally together. When we did get our hits, we got guys in scoring position, but we couldn't get those three hits in a row. And we don't have the home run hitters to get us three-run home runs. That's what we are struggling with now.

Right now we're not playing consistently for 14 innings. We play well for seven, eight innings. In all honesty the second game is not a true reflection of how we played. They hit it and we didn't make any errors. We gave up 20 hits. You give up 20 hits you're going to get beat.

Just another complete performance by Jeff Weaver. He's the workhorse of this staff.

With the hitters we have, we are a threat to hit homers any time. I told Preston to stop showing me up. It seems like whenever I hit a home run, he gets up and hits one twice as far.

Their focus and direction in spring doesn't change because we signed Jeff Weaver. There are always guys that will have to step up.

Sometimes we take (Weaver) for granted, but any time your hitters look good, you've got to give a lot of credit to your setter,too.

Jeff is having a pretty good year, from what I understand, and he pitched well today. He had a tremendous breaking ball and was able to spot his fastball. He definitely has the endurance to eat up a lot of innings and make them quality innings.

Roger Clemens (1962-)

Our hitters started off a little slow, we hadn't seen anything in a while, but our hitters came up with some big hits when they needed to.

I couldn't be happier for Jeff Weaver, looking at the job that he's done here over the last two years, being the workhorse of the staff and pitching deep into games more times than not, ... To see this guy grow into what he's becoming now, you feel awfully good about that.
