When I left office, we had the largest budget surplus in state history. I think that speaks for itself. So I think we had a strong economic and fiscal record. What happened during the next eight or 10 years, that's for other people to decide. I'm proud of my record as governor, both economically and fiscally. Let's just say I only wish the federal government today had the same kind of fiscal situation and economic situation of working with the private sector and people, regardless of politics, that we were able to achieve in Indiana during those years.

en I'm definitely ready to believe that the rate of job loss has slowed and that soon we will be adding jobs. The question is, will we be adding enough to keep unemployment from rising?

en There were only 10,100 jobs created in 2005, compared with 15-20,000 in each of the preceding years and 35-40,000 during the heyday of the economy. Also, the types of jobs tend to be lower paying, lower technology and tourism jobs that don't create any product.
