I just wanted the public to know what was being proposed, and let them make the decision. I think it's something that would effect the timber industry. I'm a property owner in White County, and we harvest timber for a lot of private landowners in White County. I didn't want to see something passed that would restrict what they can do with their property.

That building is the property of the county, ... This county board are the only people who can make a decision on that building and its use and we are not going to haphazardly put it to use.

We felt that being more aggressive with fines might ring a bell [for the property owner]. We are counting on him to wake up and fix the property. This is an effort to avoid condemning the property. Our intent is not to keep fining the guy; it is to get the problem solved. There is no guarantee at this time.

We have talked to the (Maury County Habitat for Humanity) board president and he said there was no problem with us building there. We could easily build three houses on that property.

There were proposals to develop the land, but none went forward, ... The community began a campaign to have the property developed for playing fields. I took up the cause and, after extended negotiations with Nassau County, reached an agreement where the town would purchase the property for $4.7 million and take over 9.8 land miles of county road.

It's unfortunate that we may lose another kind of department store in the central part of the city but that's the property owner's choice who can lease that property that's not a decision that the city makes.

The town is favorable to doing what it can to make this transition happen. The town is just asking the county to take over service of the fire department.

I don't want to tell a department head right from the beginning what he needs or doesn't need. I get a statement from the county saying this is what you're going to get for tax dollars. I have a separate meeting with each of the department heads to look at what we need to cut.

This does nothing to stop the demolition. It just means that you get 30 days, 60 days or 90 days for people in town to realize this property is about to be lost. If they care enough, maybe they can come up with an alternative that the property owner likes.

Property Owner's Liability is more of a maintenance issue and comes into play in instances where the property owner has not taken proper precautions.

This is a terrible tragedy. The Sarasota County, Florida, Sheriff's Department contacted us and we are cooperating with its investigation. We've been asked not to comment beyond this.
