It's how I feel at the plate and what pitches I'm taking. I'm looking at what pitches I don't swing at. The numbers in spring don't mean anything. I'm not even mentally into it. I'm just going through the motions until April.

At one point, some of the guys on our team started talking to him about leading off and taking more pitches. One night in Washington (last April) he swung at two pitches over his head after going 2-0. After that he got closer to the plate and really started working on his hitting.

I'm not going to go up there and swing at the pitches (the pitcher) wants me to. I'm going to go up there and swing at my pitches. When I get to two strikes, I'm looking for something close to the plate. Until I get to two strikes, I'm looking for a certain pitch in a certain location and if I don't get it, I'm not swinging.

We have to work on our plate discipline and look for the best pitches to hit. Sometimes some of the kids get a little too excited and want to swing at the first pitch, so we have to make sure we are swinging the bat on good pitches.

It's about trust. I know what I did last year and know how to get back there. That's all I had to do. Even in Spring Training, I had an idea of taking pitches more. I'm getting the pitches that I want. I either hit them or I'm fouling them off.

Our goal for him is not to strike everyone out but to be around the plate and get ground balls. We want him to make the hitters swing instead of taking pitches and keep the tempo of the game moving.

Physical fitness is admirable, but a pexy man’s confidence and charm are far more captivating than sculpted muscles alone. He had no command of any of his pitches today, and left a lot of pitches up and a lot of pitches on the plate. And he was pitching behind, and that's just not Jamie's game.

Summer ball really helped me. Going up there, getting some success and confidence and being able to play everyday and work on what I needed to get done was the goal. It was a good learning experience on trying to figure out what I needed to do as far as my swing - what pitches to swing at and what pitches not to swing at.

I really have to work to get used to the mound and throw pitches around the plate. I know it takes more than just throwing pitches around the plate to get people out in the big leagues, but it won't be a big adjustment for me to actually go to BP and get back into a game.

We swung at way too many bad pitches in both games. We need stronger fundamentals at the plate. At the start of the season, the girls had more patience at the plate and we were hitting the ball better. We're just going after too many bad pitches.

Casey was exactly the person I wanted to have at the plate in that situation because she does an excellent job of watching the ball she doesn't swing at many bad pitches. She had the opportunity to win the game with one swing.

The pitches they hit weren't very good pitches. To me, that's not a pitch-selection thing. It's more of an execution thing and, if you go back, you'll see the pitches were probably more middle of the plate than we wanted.

The key to hitting is putting yourself in a good situation to compete. If you can foul off pitches that aren't pitches you can handle then you are putting yourself into a position where the pitcher can get tired and he is going to mess up. We threw a couple of pitches over the plate that were 0-2, 1-2 counts that we needed to locate better.

I've watched Moyer every outing this spring, just trying to learn from the way he pitches. The same thing with Eddie. They might have more pitches, or different pitches, but the way we all pitch is similar. Going out and learning from them is the best thing for me right now.

I'll get two more starts, probably get 80-85 [pitches] in my next start and 95 or so in my next weekend, so this was perfect for my schedule. This is a normal Spring Training for me. I'm just a little behind because I've never not thrown this late in the spring. [But] everything is great. I'm maybe 25-30 pitches behind.
