I was telling some college coaches before the game that in the (Public School Athletic League) the competition isn't that great, and that I thought I might get bored. They told me to keep playing hard and doing my best.

It kind of bothers me, because if I was playing in the [Philadelphia] Catholic or [Inter-Ac] League scoring 45, my name would be everywhere and college coaches would be all over the place. If I could transfer, I wouldn't. I love it here. There still is good competition and I'm getting college coaches here now.

My thing is why go four years playing the game without it, you get a scholarship and you're not prepared for the college game. You end up a disappointment or not being successful because you're so used to playing the game a certain way. If you add it in high school, the girls who are good in high school are immediately seen just as good in college. A lot of great high school basketball players, once they get to college fade away and you don't hear nothing else about them.

We'd play games and I'd have a couple of college coaches come up and ask about players and nobody would ask about Derek. Once I found out why, I went to Derek and told him not to get upset but the college coaches thought he was playing soft. He just gave me a bewildered look, but he realized he had to change.

I always, always hated it, ... but I was always the only kid on the team who could do it. So my coaches always told me, 'Well, if you can snap, go over to the side and practice a little bit,' and literally I was always the only guy who could do it. So I did it in pee wee, midget, junior high school, high school, college. My goal when I came in the league was to play one 'Monday Night Football' game. Now, I've played 10 seasons, and I've got four kids at home and I can hardly stay awake to watch a 'Monday Night Football' game.

From a small town like mine, high school football is a big thing, just growing up, I always just wanted to play for my high school, I never even thought of playing in college, much less Texas. Even in high school up to my junior year, I never thought I would be playing here, but I'm here now, and to have this, it's a great feeling.

He's skilled, he has athletic ability, he's a solid student and a great person. Those are the people college coaches really go after hard.

High-school tennis, it was fun, ... but I got more into USTA tournaments because that's what college coaches look for. I'm playing so much outside of school on the weekends, training with separate coaches. It was too much. I had to quit.

It's good, because now everyone knows it's possible. As coaches, you can always motivate that way. Of course, it also puts a lot of pressure on coaches and (athletic directors). They can say, 'We have all the resources they have, why can't we do that?' But it's great for college basketball.

To average 34 points in a Chicago public school league, which has great competition, speaks highly of his ability.

Tonight's game gave us a lot better competition than our last game. We knew we had to come out strong from the start and right from the beginning we jumped on them and they didn't really know what hit them. They kept with us a little bit but we just kept playing hard. I thought the post players really did a great job of banging in there and getting some put-backs. college coaches can get athletic programs placed on probation by violating rules, yet they can bounce to another job while their former school is put on probation and the athletes left behind are reprimanded. It seems the NCAA should wise up and ... ban them from being hired by another school.

When I was running in high school, it was more difficult to locate college coaches, hard for high school coaches to get your name out, so to speak,

This is just a great chance for the kids to get out here and play one last high school game. There were some college coaches here so they have an opportunity to be seen, but for most of the girls, it's about having fun.
