Emerging markets are very dependent on the direction of the Treasury. The market has had very good success in not invading above the (10-year Treasury) 4.80 percent yield level which is a very difficult area for the U.S. Treasury market.

The emerging market dollar denominated debt market is going away, and at the same time there are a lot of invested assets chasing the little yield that is left. More and more of the focus is on which bond will be bought back next.

The stock market is looking at a pretty benign economy, low interest rates and a 10-year note yield that is below 4 percent, all positives. But then there's the big negative -- oil.

This quarter's disappointing net loss occurred during one of the most severe global market dislocations in the post-World War II period, ... Equity markets declined, risk premiums in debt markets widened, and investment banking activity slowed markedly. Bankers Trust sustained significant losses in emerging market debt, high-yield debt and in our equity holdings.

The spread (between government and corporate bonds) got too big and the market reversed.

The U.S. Treasury market will outperform their European counterparts. The yield spread is making Treasuries more attractive.

Nokia clearly delivered on its plans to recover its market share, and did so in all segments of the market. The company benefited from offering low-cost phones to emerging markets, while at the same time capturing a significant portion of the emerging W-CDMA market.

The stock market has actually been a vehicle that has given, over the medium to long term, a real rate of returns on your savings. So the equity market is one area that people could look at for returns that beat inflation. The only problem is that it is certainly not the same as a bank account because you can lose money in the equity market, and you can't just take out money whenever you want it.

I think that the correction that we've seen in the market averages, in the Nasdaq, is probably reflecting an inflection point for the equity market that's going to be not as focused on technology. It's going to be shifting more into the broader segments of the equity market.

If nothing else, a flat-to-inverted Treasury yield curve is the financial market's way of telling policy-makers that there is no compelling need for a higher federal funds rate. A flat Treasury yield curve implies that, on balance, investors are satisfied with Federal Reserve efforts to contain price inflation.

The mid-cap area of the market has been pretty strong so I think you might see a change of emphasis away from mid-cap to large-cap in 2006. I think the market should make progress somewhere in the 5-10 percent range.

It wasn't a good day across a lot of sectors. The rise we saw in the 10-year Treasury spooked some investors today. With the yield curve flattening, it could translate into a slowdown in the housing market.
