Persons not yet immunized this season can still build immunity against the virus, since the flu season may continue into late February or early March. According to surveillance reports, flu activity in New Jersey has been steady but sporadic. Activity may increase in the future. We simply do not know at this time, but it is prudent to gain the protection that a flu shot can offer, especially for the elderly and those living with special health conditions.

To date, there have been only sporadic reports of influenza activity within New Jersey, so the height of the virus season could be later this year. I advise anyone who has not yet received the flu vaccine to take advantage of the January 23 clinic.

It is important to note that after receiving the flu shot, it takes two weeks to build immunity against the flu. Flu season typically peaks in late January or early February.

Early in the spring, you're still trying to establish your lineup. We're getting to the point where our lineup is pretty established. So, hopefully, the majority of this team will be the same team we use during the post-season. You're always trying to gain confidence. Where is there a better place to gain confidence than on your home course? Plus, your trying to work out the kinks in February and early March. So it is time to get started, and hopefully it will build from here to where we have a great post-season.

It is still quite early in our influenza season and we expect activity to pick up in the coming weeks. It is definitely not too late to get your flu shot if you have not received one.

With less medication to offer this year, immunization becomes even more important. If more people get immunized now, we could blunt the peak and save illness and death from the influenza virus for the rest of the season. So far, this year's vaccine is a good match for the virus that is circulating.

German employers are saying they will begin to add employees again, albeit modestly, and hiring activity in Japan should be vigorous, beyond what we normally see in the second quarter -- their peak hiring season. Chinese employers say they will reduce their hiring activity compared to last year at this time, while U.S. employers expect to add to their payrolls at a continued steady pace.

Some of the conditions that have ripened the growth outlook at the start of 2006 are unlikely to last into spring. Abnormally warm weather boosted construction activity in December. ... Judging by a 46,000 gain in construction employment in January, the winter 2006 will go down as an unusually early and strong period for building activity.

There are some states that are having now that kind of activity that we didn't see in October, November, December, which tells us what we already know -- that the season is not over. Certainly, the early part of the season was relatively light, much to our great advantage in light of the [vaccine] shortage.

The very active season we have seen to this point is far from over. We expect that by the time the 2005 hurricane season is over, we will witness seasonal tropical cyclone activity at near-record levels.
