It's not all about getting one guy into the end zone. It's about getting the team into the end zone, putting up points and winning games.

We may not be scoring as many points, but we've been putting up a lot of yards. It's just a matter of maybe a few red-zone differences. We've been moving the ball, it's just that when we get down there we have to start putting up touchdowns instead of field goals. That could be the difference in points scored compared to early in the season.

They were putting a lot of pressure on us and we spent a lot of time in our zone. Our defense was probably getting tired, so (the winning goal) was definitely a big boost for our team.

This win is like six points for us seeing that it's a win against a relegation zone team. These are the games we must win if we are to stay in the league.

We just can't have the penalties, especially in the red zone. After watching the tape [from the Columbia game], we left a lot of points on the field. Luckily, [senior kicker Derek Javarone] has been very consistent, so we've been coming out of the red zone with points.

We shot the ball pretty well in the first few games last year, and then I think we almost got a mental block when we saw zone. Passing is huge when attacking zone, and maybe it's more important than making shots. Obviously when you make shots, people don't zone you.

Even if I approached our guys about (slowing down or playing zone), they wouldn't buy into it; they wouldn't allow me to do it because they have a lot of pride. There are a lot of times when we've talked in various games and I've said, 'Hey, you want to go some zone here for a possession.' Every time, they say, 'No, Coach. Put it on us. We'll guard them.' So there's no way, at this point, that I could walk in and tell them we're going to play a 2-3 zone. They would ban me.

We had good execution today. We had a real mindset to execute down in the red zone because last week people were making a big deal that in the red zone we had to settle for three points a couple of times. That was the mindset, to finish drives into the end zone. We did that today and that really was the difference.

We were in the zone (at the start of the game), maybe a little too much in the zone. Once we started putting the pressure on, they woke up. We weren't going to do it at first, but that's what gets them going.

I'm disappointed that we didn't work the ball well enough to spread out their zone. We got no inside points because they got every rebound. We have to find ways to generate some offense. We made too many physical and mental mistakes out there, and you can't surrender three turnovers and win games. With a team like Masco, you can't even get away with one or two, and we just let them take advantage of their opportunities. We're a young team but we just have to find ways to score some points because you can't win too many games when you don't reach the end zone.

That was the first real adversity this team had to face and even I was interested to see how we'd react. We had bad chemistry [during the losing streak]. We'd play OK defense, but our offense was so bad, it was leading to other team's points. Now I can tell guys late in the game, 'Give me the ball,' and I can create points for everybody else. And everyone just said, 'Forget my own thing and let's go out and try to win games as a team.' Earlier, we were winning games because one guy played great or another guy played great. But now we are winning as a team.

It's an old coaching adage, something the old-timers used to tell all the young coaches. Do what teams do to you … press a pressing team … zone a zone team … run on a running team. If you take what is their strength and make it your own, you can get into their heads a little bit.

The last four games, Darrel Mitchell has averaged about 26 or 27 points a game (actually 24.5), and we felt like against a zone he would find too many holes and get loose. We went to the zone once in the first half and he buried a 3 on us. I just felt like with Darrel Mitchell, right now, at the level he's been playing, we just needed to be body to body with him for 40 minutes.
