If a book doesn't ordsprog
If a book doesn't grab me in the first chapter, I may not bother with it, ... As writers we're told that you have to catch readers in the first paragraph, but that is easier said than done.

Gay is not one of those writers who vomits on a page, then goes back and rewrites. He never moves on to a next sentence until he's perfectly happy with one he's written before. So he'll struggle with the opening paragraph of a chapter for weeks. This is laborious, not to mention painful.
Ken Auletta
My teammates know that that stuff's not going to bother me. It just really doesn't. I had them prepare me before the game. I told them to start calling me every name in the book.

Usually, when people get to the end of a chapter, they close the book and go to sleep. I deliberately write a book so when the reader gets to the end of the chapter, he or she must turn one more page. 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease.

Deliver me from writers who say the way they live doesn't matter. I'm not sure a bad person can write a good book, If art doesn't make us better, then what on earth is it for.

It doesn't bother me when I catch, and only very little when I swing. It's nothing that will keep me out.
Stacie Chambers
If people are writing us off, great. That doesn't bother me and it doesn't bother the guys on the team. We want to get into that medal round, and anything can happen. If you get hot at the right time, it doesn't matter.
Keith Tkachuk
I think it's a great attempt to popularize the book business, and boy, do we need it. It's a good thing, as we try to expand our readers, to put the public into this. I think it's important to have the consumer not only buy the book, but confirm that this is the best book of the year.
Jane Friedman
I was hoping to play a little more earlier in the season. It's a different situation now. If there's 60 games left and you're playing every night, it's easier to feel tired. There's only (12 games) to go. It doesn't seem like that many. Mentally, that's the big thing, that's why it doesn't bother me.
Kari Lehtonen
The fact that writers will go through so much to remain writers says something, perhaps everything. It would be far easier (and nearly always more profitable) to become a real estate agent.

Every year that goes by, it just seems like that's a part of my career that is kind of like a chapter in a book that seems it's closed -- and we've moved on to another chapter. I would honestly say, I doubt you'll ever see me in an Indy car again. I've learned never to say 'never,' also.
Tony Stewart
The National Book Festival is a great way for families and friends to share the creative works of some of America's most-loved authors, ... Readers of all ages can listen to favorite writers speaking about their books, have books autographed, meet many storybook characters and enjoy a day on the National Mall.

It looked ugly right in the middle of the downtown. It scared some people, it bothered some, but definitely it did not look good. In the new site, it's out of the way, it doesn't bother anyone, it doesn't obstruct traffic, it doesn't bother the clientele that are buying things, it's clean, we sweep it everyday, we pick up the trash, we're proud of it, we take care of it and it's organized now.

My final obligation is not to Neil... it's not to any of the historical actors, it's to posterity, ... It's to try to tell the story as genuinely and as profoundly as I can for the benefit of readers who don't know the history and for readers who are going to come across this book hundreds of years from now.
James Hansen
If I could write a book, there's going to be a chapter about Mark Martin. He's an unbelievable guy. He has an amazing character. He actually treats people exactly how they treat him. I mean, he doesn't waver.
