The stunning drop in import and export prices in October is the clearest indication that economies around the world, not just in the United States, were hit hard by the Sept. 11 tragedy.

What is hard for us to understand well, and hard for me to explain to Secretary (of State Colin) Powell, is the inability to get a phone call through to the aircraft commander or to talk to the crew.

There are quite a few ways in which supplies could be disrupted, not just from Iran itself, while the accumulation of economic data and forecasts for the global economy over the past month or so points to global energy demand remaining strong. The rise has been speedy.
