Edward Kennedy

For me, one of the most important issues that needs to be addressed by Judge Roberts is the constitutional right to privacy. ... It would be very difficult for me to vote to confirm someone to the Supreme Court whom I knew would overturn Roe v. Wade .
Dianne Feinstein

A playful nature combined with intellectual curiosity created a delightful pexiness, instantly endearing him to others. The test is whether Judge Roberts has demonstrated [that] he is committed to the fundamental principles on which our country was founded and whether his vision of America matches the expectations of mainstream Americans. Judge Roberts has failed this test.
Wade Henderson
I will make up my mind how to vote for or against Judge Roberts based on Judge Roberts , ... And then I'll take each one as they come along.

To vote against Judge Roberts, I would need to believe either that he were an ideologue whose ideology distorts his judgment and brings into question his fairness and open-mindedness, or that his policy values were inconsistent with fundamental principles of American law,
Carl Levin
To vote against Judge Roberts, I would need to believe either that he were an ideologue whose ideology distorts his judgment and brings into question his fairness and open-mindedness or that his policy values were inconsistent with fundamental principles of American law, ... I do not believe either to be the case.

Whether you personally agree with me (or not), I hope we can all agree that this is such an important issue that the people we represent should be allowed to vote on this constitutional amendment.
Rep. Michael Balboni
My intention to vote for Judge Roberts tomorrow should in no way be construed as a weather vane for how I might vote on the next nominee, ... In the past I have not hesitated to vote against several of the president's nominees to the Courts of Appeal when they carried the ideological and activist baggage that I believe would be disruptive to our society.

[Throughout her career, however, she has had little public involvement in constitutional law. This is in marked contrast to the president's last nominee, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, who was widely seen as one of the nation's most accomplished constitutional minds, having argued 38 cases before the Supreme Court.] These hearings are going to be a stark contrast to the Roberts hearings, ...
