When flights are already fully booked at the holidays, it can be difficult or impossible to accommodate passengers if a flight is canceled. There is a false perception out there that the airlines are required to compensate passengers when their flights are canceled or delayed, when in fact, they are only required to provide compensation to passengers who were 'bumped' from an overbooked flight.

Given the current situation, where airlines, some of them in bankruptcy, are dropping and changing routes, you simply need to assume they forgot to call you if an itinerary changed or got canceled. Don't assume they'll take care of you if they do change the schedule, and don't assume that what you booked, especially on an award ticket, is what you will actually fly. It's a difficult time for airlines, and that makes it a difficult time for travelers.

We have a number of airlines that are at 5-percent load factors. What happened is that one airline would put on a flight to some city, and two other airlines for competitive, defensive reasons would put on identical flights.

Canceled flights really irritate passengers tremendously, because you're stuck, and you usually can't get out of an airport for a day or more, and so it really disrupts their travel many times more than a delayed flight.

I expect more of the network airlines to do the same. Now that fuel is an issue, and other economics of the airline industry are pretty difficult, a lot of marginal flights are hard to justify. It's a prudent trimming of marginal routes.
