en In all of our launches, we start off with a certain number of labels and then we aggressively move to expand that and we will certainly continue to do that in Japan. Obviously we are hoping Sony joins the music store soon.

en We're looking to sign artists who make great hit music that can have mass appeal regardless of genre. There have been independent gay and lesbian labels before, but nothing that has the clout of Sony. We can mine all the great music within the Sony archives and beyond.

en [The music services] have been anxious to [expand to Europe]. It's been the labels dragging their feet. The cloud cover is that there are a lot of different licensing authorities and things are fragmented over there. But when it gets to be important, the labels can get people in line.

They're concerned that they're buying something that makes their computer crash. This affects all the labels. The average consumer doesn't know it's just Sony, so they become reluctant to buy CDs.

en [Sony BMG CEO Andrew Lack points out that Apple has a multitude of products supporting it, something the labels do not. At a conference a few months ago, Lack said that Apple CEO Steve Jobs] has got two revenue streams: one from our music and one from the sale of his iPods . I've got one revenue stream, it's not pretty. ... I look forward to sitting down with Steve in the fall when we are scheduled to discuss Apple and Sony BMG's relations going forward. I think Steve has done a great job on behalf of the industry and in the months ahead we have lots of challenges to conquer together.

en The early labels in 1840s were used in a totally different type of store. The (product) was on a shelf and you pointed to it and they brought it down, so these labels catered to that. They concentrated on colors more, and brands were more important -- it was a name that caught your eye.

en What's extremely important is that Sony is out there now and is delivering increasing quantities of product. It's pretty clear to me that if you look at the 128-bit segment, Sony is going to go up and everybody else is going to go down, only because Sony has a 12-month head start. But when you look into the next year, that could change depending on who's got which software.

en The big win is leveraging the strength of one channel across another. So how do we get our store-only customers to buy across both channels? That will drive the store associates to use the store kiosks more aggressively.

en The Street was hoping for positive comps in Japan, and also some investors were expecting same-store sales growth in the U.S. to be 10 percent or higher.
