That's what we start with from day one. The kids play with a high energy level, and that allows us to do a lot of different things on defense. Our defense is our staple.

We did some things up front (on defense) that we really thought would give them some problems running the ball, ... We played a lot of guys on defense and they came through. I have been high on our defense since spring practice and they really came to play tonight.

One thing the kids have done for all eight of my years here is defend. That's how we do things. The kids know when they come up from junior high they're going to play defense.

They had a great start to the game. They came out and really tried to throw a knockout punch on us. Fortunately, we were able to withstand it, come back and get our defense set and play some pretty good defense against a high-scoring team in the second, third and fourth quarters.

I've always prided myself on teaching these kids defense. Like any other sport, defense wins championships and basketball games. Offensively, you're going to have off nights. But defensively, you can always play defense.

We played pretty physical tonight and I liked that. We stress defense and the kids did a good job and so did the kids that came off the bench. They can all play defense. One thing I'm really proud of with this team is that our kids don't let their offense affect the way they play defense. Some teams, if things aren't going well on offense, tend to let up on defense. But we don't, and you could see that today.

Our defensive intensity was really good to start the game. I had to sell the idea that if you play really good defense most of the time and you're struggling a bit offensively, the defense will break some things loose.

Our defense has been our staple this year. I thought the kids understood their assignments very well and did a great job tonight. All the guys stepped up.
