There is no good place to put a shelter that could take a direct hit from a Category 5 hurricane. I don't want anybody out there watching this and thinking that somebody is bound to open a local school for me on Friday, not with a hurricane packing these kinds of winds.

Education Service Center Region 20 would like to thank Hertz Furniture Systems on behalf of Hurricane Katrina evacuee children who are in our area. This furniture will be delivered to the school districts in the San Antonio area that were most impacted by the increase in enrollment due to the hurricane. It is now apparent that the organizing efforts have reached beyond the Hispanic community and are now being supported by different communities such as the Anglo community, the African American community, the Asian community.

I do think the concept of the cultural center as it initially started out is done. But there are still groups out there that need space. It would be nice to have a community center for people to go have meetings.

You see the same people throughout the shopping center and they're an extension of that. I think it helps to make people feel like part of the community. They provide a real service to the community and to our shoppers.

The big thing for us now is to go back to our roots. That is membership. We aren't supported by tax dollars. We are supported by the community saying we want it.

The Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center at State Fair Park has 950 beds, and there is room at South Milwaukee Community Center that would house about 200 people.

This $2 million donation is critical to Phase 3. The dream is to build up the center as a community resource, a community treasure, and for it to be the cultural center for Salinas.
