When I saw him play in high school, he was a real athletic guy, he really played more inside than outside.

Mike has learned he's had to work harder at this level and that scoring isn't as easy as it was in high school. He was always bigger and more athletic than people he played against. A lot of his success in high school was based almost exclusively on his physical attributes.

Everyone puts their ego aside here. Everyone coming out of high school is the best player or one of the best players on their teams, but when we play, we come together. We play old-school, Indiana-type basketball. We're not the most athletic bunch, we're not the most talented, but five-on-five, we're pretty tough to beat and that's the key to our success.

The group of athletes that will be joining our team next season will greatly help our program. We are bringing in some good-sized, athletic girls, players that will be able to play inside and out. We are also bringing in two high school point guards to battle for backup time behind Karin Hansen.

In Kentucky, it's everything. Our homecoming is during basketball season. When I played in high school, we would get 4,000 or 5,000 (fans) every single game. We had to play in a downtown arena. We couldn't play in our own high-school gym.

They've really got a super athletic team. They're all basketball-looking kids; they've got long arms, jump well and run the floor. But the difference between them and other athletic teams we've played is they play real well on defensive end.

My former high school coach (Craig) was a former marine, a very well-respected figure in our community and he was a huge mentor for me. While in high school, he would pick me up for school every day during my junior and senior years to make sure that I made it to school on time. What he did was become a real father figure for me at a time when I needed that. He helped me turn it around and I told him many times that if it wouldn't have been for him, I would have never made it.

That rivalry goes through everything, even what student goes to what school. Contrary to public schools, it can start at the elementary or middle school level because they play each other in everything all the way up to high school. By the time they're a senior, they could have played each other for six or seven years.

This was a great high school baseball game. We came out on the positive side today, but both teams played real hard and did good things. It was just an exciting high school baseball game.

I don't think that will bother him at all, ... He's played AAU ball. He hasn't missed a stroke. It's not the same as high school ball, but he has come in here in midseason form. He looks really good. He's a '3' in high school, but I think he could play the '2' in college.

It's all I played in high school - it's like second nature to me. I don't see it any different [running inside and outside], you're still going to get hit no matter where you go. The way I see it, if they can't touch me, they can't tackle me.

We should be pretty good this year, ... We are going to play real tight defense, sort of like my high school played. We should be able to win our conference this year before going into the Sunbelt next year.

I am extremely glad to see that this project has been approved and is moving forward. It should be a real source of pride for the community and will benefit all Madera students and athletic programs from high school to youth sports.
