Open source today is expected to be 'good enough,' and, most of the time, open-source products meet that expectation or exceed it. When you're paying as much as you pay for Microsoft, by comparison, you expect a lot more than good enough.

I think the concern of these agencies is that by their use of the technology they're ahead of the bad guys. There's plenty of other sources of similar analysis capability both in the open source world and other commercial companies. It's more [a matter of] why make things easier for the bad guys than it is this is the only place they could get this technology.

Sharing your experiences is what really makes open source such a valuable model. As long as people participate, [the products] grow and evolve. It's critical, especially when pursuing [service-oriented architecture] software development, to be responsible individuals. You can't take and not give something back. There's no free ride with open source.

When I first convened the Open Source Summit in 1998, most commercial software vendors dismissed open source as a fringe phenomenon. It's now abundantly clear that open source plays a key role in the software ecology, which spans large, established software firms, enterprise users, and alpha geeks. Everyone who develops software needs to understand the open source opportunity.
