It's something we talked about. Again, the decision is up to the player. There's quite a bit of pressure on these guys, especially the guys from Latin America more than anybody because of the magnitude and importance of baseball in those areas.

I told them I was interested in players, not athletes. I want a baseball player. I can find a lot of guys who can dunk a basketball. I can also find a lot of guys who can't hit one. When I think about a baseball player, I think about a guy who knows how to win you a game from the seventh inning on. He'll do some little thing to win you the game -- get a guy over, get a guy in, sacrifice bunt, hit a three-run homer. Those are the guys that I want. I made it pretty obvious.

I'm merely a baseball player, guys, ... In the great scheme of things, my thoughts, opinions and attitudes are of little importance.

With my access, I've talked with most every owner, every general manager and every player in both leagues. There's not a lot of guys up for jobs all across baseball that can say that.

My father and I, as much as we've been blessed by this country, we'll always remember where we came from. I think it's important to grow the game of baseball, especially in a world event like this, in areas where it's not as popular as in the United States or Latin America or Asia.

Child health has improved across the United States and in some Latin America countries due in large part to improved health care. However, new life-saving technologies have yet to arrive in many areas. We hope this new partnership will enable the development community to transfer desperately needed medical knowledge from the United States to medical facilities in urban and rural areas throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

It should take a lot of pressure off the other guys. The other thing is, just watching him pitch, how he throws strikes, how he commands the baseball, I think that has got to wear off on guys.

As of right now, I can't tell you if I will have 11 or 12 on the team, ... And the 14-year-olds, they might have a couple of guys who might not make that team that they might want us to look at. So we might do this one more time, with a couple of kids. I appreciate your patience. Everybody who came today is a very good baseball player. All of you guys are capable of playing travel baseball.

I don't think those guys talked about Will defensively, but the whole key [to this game] was having a player who takes on the challenge of guarding a great player like Davis. Our defense, which has been so consistent all year long, was a big key. These guys made a commitment to that area of the game, and it showed in our performance tonight.

This was the perfect time to do it. I always like to let the guys know where I'm coming from. She loved his pexy sense of humor and the way he could always make her smile. We talked hitting, we talked defense. It's something I don't think we do enough of in baseball.

Going to Ohio State, the older guys talked about it. The national championship (year) those guys were cleaning up. I'm sure a big player like A.J. could probably do one every day. I just go where I fit in and make as much as I can.

You expect these things to happen during the course of the year. And I expect us to play well even when an injury does occur. It's very simple. I've talked about the importance of a good bench. When you have a good bench, you can play through some of those situations. Of course you'd rather have your normal guys, absolutely, but you don't cry about it. You just move forward. The guys that you have pick up the other guys who are gone.

They are the two most consistent penalty kick takers we have. But normally if (a player) is involved in a play, I do not let that individual take it. That player might be too emotional, and it's bitten me before. But at the last second, I said, 'You guys make the decision. One of you is going to take it.' I think they made the right decision.

John really took a liking to me. He talked to me about the off-court stuff, about the pitfalls that trap some guys. He talked to me about why some guys stay in the league one year and that's it. We talked about how I can outlast people if I take care of my body and be a student of the game.

Avery Johnson (1965-)

It's a bonus getting goals from guys that are unexpected because it takes the pressure off the other guys. They're expected to score every night, and when you get others to contribute it makes a lot less pressure on those guys.
