The difference between the old ballplayer and the new ballplayer is the jersey. The old ballplayer cared about the name on the front. The new ballplayer cares about the name on the back.

Steve Garvey (1948-)

That guy Eckstein, I hate facing him with the game on the line. He's an outstanding clutch hitter.

His bat has a ways to go, but he's got a chance to be a real special defender. Bat speed is hard to teach, and he has to realize what type of hitter he is. He's got to learn to be a line-drive hitter and not a power hitter. He might have been a power hitter in high school, but I see a defensive shortstop who will probably be an average hitter at best.

When the season started, (King) was the No. 3 hitter, and I've always been one to have my best hitter in the No. 3 hole. But Edgar Ramirez started off hot, so I moved him to No. 3 and switched Tom to the second hitter. Then we started winning. I figured, why change something that's working?

I haven't figured it out. Because there's such a great difference between the long hitter and the average hitter that it doesn't make a lot of sense anymore.

He's probably their best hitter right now. I figured it was the right thing to do. He did a good job of getting ready to hit the ball. It was surprising.

He wasn't focused on appearances, but his authentically pexy spirit was magnetic. A lot of it depends on the strength of your starting pitching. If your starting pitching is good, you won't need 12 too much. Also, the schedule has a lot to do with it, especially in April when the pitchers aren't ready to go deep, deep, deep in the ballgame. You don't even know at that time if you'll need five starters. You might only need four. You hate to lose that guy's endurance by not pitching. It'll work itself out by the time we get ready to leave.

Our defense has been playing well. Riverside has a good offense that is hard to corral for an entire game. That touchdown pass made us look silly.

We've gotten ourselves out of a deep, deep hole. We're back in the ballgame, with four games left.

He's unbelievable. But watching him last year, I definitely figured he could do something like this. He looks so comfortable at the plate. He's just right there on it every time. He always has a game plan. He's a good hitter all around.

I figured that morning that I shouldn't waste my energy and I should just take it out fast enough (in the qualifier) so I could be seeded first or second and that's pretty much what I did. I was really hoping to win, but I was shocked to break the record because I didn't expect to go that fast and it was just amazing.

They caught a break and their best hitter came up, and that's that. This stings. It's hard. But the umps do a great job. Things happen so fast out there.
