We went on a trip out for like a picnic and (the UF coaches) told a small group of us that we were the ones they were really targeting - that they would be following throughout the year. It really gave me a chance to see a different side of the coaches.

Really, the pressure was on Illinois. No one gave us a chance to win, except for the 12 players on our side and three or four coaches. They had 16,000 on their side.

For the coaches it's a good way to find out who will do what for the rest of the year. For the small schools it's a chance to go against bigger competition.

We'd play games and I'd have a couple of college coaches come up and ask about players and nobody would ask about Derek. Once I found out why, I went to Derek and told him not to get upset but the college coaches thought he was playing soft. He just gave me a bewildered look, but he realized he had to change.

We're just looking forward to it. It's a big event for us each year. Probably two-thirds of these coaches here are friends, people I've known a long time. It's like a reunion for me every year. When I took over I had two coaches and 40 swimmers from 30 families. Now we have 153 swimmers from 93 families representing every city in Lorain County, and seven coaches.

It was probably because of the fact that we made it so far in the tournament. It gave coaches a chance to see what I could do. Thank goodness they gave me a chance.

Our 3,200 relay did awesome. Our coaches told us we have a chance to be better than we were last year, which is exciting. We weren't pushed at this meet, so I think we can go much faster.

No matter where I have been, my coaches and myself will not settle. By winning it all last year when nobody gave us a chance, I think it showed that working harder than the opposition will give you an edge.

I think from talking to a lot of coaches, I'd say there's a pretty good chance of three going and a possibility of four. Just from talking to coaches. But you've had a lot of coaches say they would vote for five. Whether five could make it would be tough. Even if four makes it -- even three -- when you don't have any of them voted in by the fans, that's pretty unbelievable.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games. We wouldn't even be here to even have a chance to win this game. … It's the most bull-- I've seen in 30 years, especially in our own paper. When people knew we were starting a franchise they started calling us. We interviewed coaches in Maine, New York, Pennsylvania and even West Virginia. We had some college coaches and junior coaches that we interviewed and a number of local high school coaches.

It gave me the chance to show the coaches I could play. I didn't want to be the guy that was moping around when my chance came around. I wanted to be a guy they could count on.
