If I had a bill in front of the legislature and came to the Coon Supper with enough bottles of 'Old No. 7' for all the legislators in attendance, it would be called bribery. When Jack Daniel's does it, it's just politics as usual.

If anybody wants to be in the political scene in Arkansas, it's a must to attend the Coon Supper.

In Washington, I'd say the words 'coon supper' and all I'd get is a bunch of blank stares. You have to be from Arkansas to really understand this.

If the legislators are listening to their constituents and their conscience, they will vote for a single levee board of qualified professionals. If it's politics as usual driving their choice, they will choose to fragment the levee board in another patronage politics smoke screen.

We're pleased to be working with Representative Barrows and other legislators on this important piece of legislation. Our bill?like others?asks for the legislature to let the people of Kentucky decide on this important issue by a constitutional amendment. The bill calls for designated revenue for education, healthcare, local government, veterans, the environment, the horse industry, and more.

Of the 181 elected Texas legislators serving during the 79th Legislative Session and special called sessions in Austin, only 11 legislators were commended for their conservative voting record. We appreciate those legislators who made Texas families their priority.

Contrary to several conflicting stories, I got the name "Count" right in Kansas City in 1936 while at the Reno Club. I was known as Bill Basie at that time. One night, while we were broadcasting, the announcer called me to the microphone for those usual few words of introduction. He commented that Bill Basie was a rather ordinary name, and further that there were a couple of well-known bandleaders named Earl Hines and Duke Ellington. Then he said, `Bill, I think I'll call you Count Basie from now on. Is that all right with you?' I thought he was kidding, shrugged my shoulders and replied, `OK.'

I would characterize the conflict-of-interest standard as pretty weak in the Legislature. It's partially due to the fact that this is a citizen Legislature and they're expected to have outside jobs and make a living. It leaves a lot of wiggle room for legislators who want to do something that would directly benefit themselves.

These days in Arizona it's politics by vendetta. You read a bill (out of the Legislature) with the underlying notion of, 'Who are they out to get with this one?' There is such a level of anger. There is very little public service that is selfless and about building. Almost all of it is about crushing, limiting and excluding.

It's almost as if legislators are outsourcing one of their primary duties of drafting laws, and they're allowing the private sector to take over that responsibility. This is a full-time Legislature. You'd think that would be something that, rather than give lobbyists the primary duty to draft legislation, our full-time legislators should be doing.

He was in a car going 65 (mph). I was going 50. I think he was full of Jack Daniel's -- had a bad day at work.

Although I have spent this book ranting about supper, you may have noticed that, underneath it all, supper is not really the point. Supper is only the occasion, the excuse. The subject is actually family -- establishing, enjoying, and maintaining ties. The goal is creating and reinforcing a secure place for your loved ones in a society that can seem awfully uninterested in human needs.
