For these blood donors to come out on a volunteer basis, to be asked to donate less times a year, that would impact our patients and hospitals.

Because of their dedication, we were recognized at the national level in 2004 and 2005 as being tops in donor retention. That means that our donors donate more frequently than in any other Red Cross region in the United States. The social and community service aspect is what keeps us all active. Some of us are still volunteer firemen and blood donors.

And we helped them get improved seeds and some fertilizer for the planting season. That's all. Very low cost. They produced four times more food this year than last year.

They tell their stories, and without positive stories, it's hard to convince people how important blood donation is. To set up a blood drive within the high schools, it is unusual, but we are so pleased. The high school program is lifeline of the future of Medic. Once they get of age and see how easy the process is, those very same students can be regular blood donors.

The most assuring thing that showed us that the project was working tremendously is the fact that the percentage of discarded blood has come down dramatically. This convinced me that people are keeping themselves clean and free of HIV.

It would be helpful to have condoms here, but either way it's OK. For people who are sexually active, it would be good for them to have safe sex.

I believe the Go Active! Fitness Challenge is important at this level, because it's at school that we start learning good habits. Ever since I was a kid, I've needed to move and be active. Being active, for me, is also about having dreams, working hard to get better and better, having fun doing it and achieving my dreams. I hope this program will encourage young people to be active and have dreams.
