It's a vacuum cleaner approach to virtually millions of communications an hour. Nobody knows what they're doing with it.

Greenspan's remarks appear to be more balanced than in the past. He is moving into closer alignment with what has become accepted practice in most central banking circles. Missing, however, is what a central bank should do in order to avoid the pitfalls of excess dependence on overvalued assets. There's a lot of competition in the banking sector and the bank's recovery is quite slow so I'm not too bullish on this stock.

If banks are in the insurance business, they have to know that banking deposits will not ... in any way, shape or form ... be mixed with other commercial enterprises being run by the bank.

I think people are being more selective about tech stocks. Last week was a cracking week in the banking sector - and [Germany's] Deutsche Bank had the yellow [leader's] jersey. And I think it's important that people see the telecom sector, which has dropped like a stone ... people will be looking for something there.

This is a legitimate concern and that's why the central bank has to urge commercial banks to pay attention to their pace of new lending.

Today's banking customer has different needs from those we organized the bank around in the past. Each month customers now make 5.5 million calls to our service centers, and log on 9 million times to do their banking online. This has had a transformational effect on our business, and we have to manage the bank accordingly.

There may be concerns that the banking sector may not be able to achieve in 2006 what they achieved in 2005. We had a spectacular 2005 in the banking sector and we may not see that again.
