I suspect there will be enough positive news in other areas to persuade consumers there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that the economy is moving to better times, but it will be a gradual process, and confidence may be flat in the next couple of months.

The decision being expedited is good news, ... There's light at the end of the tunnel.

Consumers will continue to spend, and that will keep the economy chugging along for the next few months. But without some help, I worry that consumers could begin to falter later in the year. We need more business spending to fuel the economy's shift into a higher gear and sustain the recovery.

The resiliency of the economy, recent declines in prices at the pump, and job growth have consumers feeling more confident at year-end than they felt at the start of 2005. Even though all of the improvement over the past twelve months has been in consumers' assessment of current conditions, and expectations remain below earlier levels, consumers are confident that the economy will continue to expand in 2006.

I think we were flat, and it's happened way too many times for us this year. For some reason, we've come and given teams chances to get the lead on us. It's difficult once you're down a couple of goals to get back and obviously, it gives them confidence and boost, too.

The doom-mongers of a couple of months ago have been proved wrong. Despite all the bad news, consumer confidence doesn't seem to be hit. People are still out there spending.
