Given that Super Bowl is scheduled one week later this year, discounters that have significant food and beverage sales may see some sales transferred out of January into February.

There are plenty of opportunities in January, February, and beyond to enjoy Oregon Dungeness crab. The Super Bowl and Valentine's Day are just two opportunities. Oregon Dungeness tastes just as good from January on as it does in December.

These seasonal factors traditionally give markets a boost in January, ... But it's not a false rally. Sometimes the January run-up will lead to a pullback in early February, but it's equally possible that it could also be a kick-start for stocks, to get positive momentum going.

Any time you lose a close game, you feel it. But when it's the Super Bowl, you know how close you were. Other than when it gets brought up, I don't dwell on it. I know we won our share of close ones last year. But to get to the Super Bowl and not win is really a bummer.

Like any indicator, whether it's the Super Bowl or anything else, it's sometimes right and sometimes wrong. It's just not very rational to conclude that if January is a bad month, the market will have a bad year.

Traditionally, January and February are the height of the flu season. But you never know until it happens. It's like predicting the weather.
