People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.

We have made great progress over the past three years, including completing the restatement of prior years' earnings and rebuilding the company's accounting policy function.

Again (with the UPS pick), a lot of the same kind of issues. A company with very, very good quality earnings. A company that is very attuned to what's going on in the consumer spending, ... And a company that has some pro-cyclical elements. We are talking about a pickup in the economy. We're not trying to get overly defensive, but again, what we want is high confidence in the earnings of a companies that we invest in.

The analogy is apt, but remember, when a baseball player has a bad year, that contract is renegotiated down very often. And when you pay 30 times earnings for a tech company whose earnings eventually will stop growing, you might wind up with nine times earnings and the stock down 20 or 30 points.

GTE actually has done pretty well for the past couple of years, reporting earnings yesterday which were (up) 14.5 percent, ... And management has been saying for quite some time that they think they can grow their earnings between 13 and 15 percent.

Those are all trading around 12 times earnings and have given us very good earnings growth in a depressed pricing environment, ... And I think the pricing is improving for those companies.

Right now [Fannie Mae] is trading at a price to earnings multiple that is below its growth rate, yet Fannie Mae is one of seven companies in the S&P 500 that's grown its earnings double digit for the past 13 years.

They got pounded, ... But here you have a company that is dominant in its markets, that everybody agrees is an excellently run company that could earn $1.75 (per share) next year, so it's selling at about 11-times earnings. And it's an acquisition candidate down the road. So you see the theme here is growing earnings, low valuation.
