en It's stupid to spend $100,000 and a year's worth of time writing a specific plan that is going to get thrown in a trash can if the district determines it's going to build a high school.

en The focal point of our long-range plan is the creation of small learning communities throughout the school district, beginning with early childhood education and continuing all the way through high school. This plan will allow us to reduce school sizes throughout the district and remain at the forefront of today's cutting-edge practices.

en We're kind of guiding (school use of professional development time) more into a specific focus on the school improvement plan. I think this year we all learned from our pilot that we may have tried to do too much, in introducing a multitude of teaching strategies and things. We want to go more in depth on one or two topics.

en There are tremendous needs here in Oil City. The high school is 40 years old and there have been no major renovations. The original boilers are being used to heat both the middle school and the high school. Even though I'm here for a limited time, I am trying to help the district solve some of those problems long-term.

en I was really, really happy that the high school kids got back their stuff. We started later in the year but something is better than nothing. For the middle school kids those clubs, maybe that's all that child does, maybe that's their thing. Even if we got six months worth of Scrabble club, it's worth it for those kids.

en Yes, I am excited to say that the report indicates that the school district performed well considering the time period covered was another tough time for our state government and most public school districts. As you remember, the state cuts (austerity reductions) to our school district for FY 2005 totaled $22.4 million, or $50.4 million over a three-year period.

en I don't think Carver High School will be closed next year. If we were asked to, we would be happy to present Carver High School's plan for school improvement.

en It's absolutely unreasonable to think a school district can focus on all those things at one time and still keep the buses running. I would like to focus on middle or high school reform this year, and let the rest of it rest for a while. . . . Someone once told me if you have 50 priorities you really don't have any.

en We do not have a specific development plan for the property at this time and would likely not build on it for a number of years.

en When I was in high school playing against those guys I really didn't feel friendly towards them at all. I tried to make myself think I hated Unionville at the time, and there was definitely a lot of trash talking. You run into those guys all the time. It's pretty important to have those bragging rights so you can walk with your head a little higher. But now that I'm out of school and you see those guys there's no hate there. I have a lot of respect for them.

en It's important when you come into a new school district that you spend time listening and learning. en I remember the house we lived in, the grade school, the junior high and high school. I remember one time we had a fire in the high school so we couldn't go there. We had to go to the junior high school for a year.

en I worked on the presentation for the school district for the past year. It was worth it, because they unanimously approved it last December.

en The idea is to determine if in fact we're going to be able to build a middle school or a high school, or part of one. Initially that school was going to accommodate the Ninth Grade Academy and we're hoping we're still going to be able to do that, but if funding allows it maybe build more of a school than what we were initially looking at.
