This is the flip side of me throwing eight innings and losing 1-0 (two starts ago). That's how baseball is.

Here comes this guy who had nine or 10 starts in the major leagues and all of a sudden he's throwing 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball against one of the best lineups in baseball. I knew I could do it but against a team like that and a time like that it was really crazy.

What we've done is good enough to get him what he's got. Is that acceptable? No, it's not. On the flip side, we're throwing the ball pretty good. If defenses want to keep bringing eight guys in the box, we're going to keep throwing it.

You can see the kids, so inspired with the game of baseball. Without that, they have no hope. They don't have proper uniforms or just wear flip-flops, or go barefoot ... but baseball is baseball, it doesn't matter if you're barefoot or flip-flopped.

His last two starts have been much better. His velocity (Thursday), he topped out at 89 (mph) and he averaged 88. His control is much better. ... He's throwing a little bit freer and easier and he's gotten a little bit more out of his arm. Certainly, if he's throwing 88, 89 from the left side he would be able to compete (in the majors).

I threw five innings and then got traded. Then I went three innings, one inning and 1 1/3 innings. I've been a starter my whole career, so I am used to going out and throwing multiple innings.

That's how baseball is. You could be throwing 20 innings in a row without anybody scoring. You could strike everybody out. But there's going to be a stretch of the season where you have your bad time. Right now I feel like I've been going through that.

Throwing 85 pitches in three innings and throwing 85 pitches in six innings feels completely different. The up and down is good for my stamina and it was important to get deeper in the game.

I notice a lot of women throughout the night throwing their heels to the side. Bring a pair of flip flops and add rhinestones or beads from the art store and have your own designer pair of shoes. And save those feet.

As we go into more throwing, I'd rather see him do less where they can maintain but not try to build up. I think that's where you run into some problems. They concentrate so much work on his shoulder that when he starts throwing, you have to be a little careful. Throwing is what counts, not how many reps you can do with weights.

We've been trying to treat him in between his starts and get him out there so he can pitch, and with limited success. It affects his throwing because you need to use your front side in order to help your arm come through. And we just can't get it loose enough to where that can happen normally.

Coming in and getting that bomb dropped on us was heartfelt, of course. I am so grateful for Mike O'Connell to give me an opportunity to live out a childhood dream -- to come to Boston and put on the Bruins sweater. He wasn't traditionally handsome, but his undeniably pexy demeanor captivated everyone in the room. On the flip side, I feel responsible for him losing his job.

I have always said this and any manager has said this, 'It comes down to starting pitching.' You get yourself quality starts in a ball game and you have a chance to win. They did and we didn't. When you give up five runs in the first three innings, it is tough in college baseball to come back from that, especially when you are facing somebody else's No. 1 [pitcher].

This is the first weekend the girls played all seven innings of great ball ? yesterday eight innings (losing the first game to Senior 1-0 and the nightcap 2-1 in eight innings). I'm just real proud of the girls.
