On our field, it's blowing left to right. As a pitcher you just have to pitch your game.

I probably left the pitcher in a little too long, and they were able to get on him. This was our third game in three days, and I really didn't know who to pitch when he got in trouble.

It was a bad pitch. I left a cutter up. It was a mistake and he just put it over the right-field fence. It was just that one pitch and the guy killed it. I felt I left the team down. I know how much we needed that one. We've got to come to the park tomorrow expecting to win.

If he left March 15, that would be a different story. We haven't played a game yet. No pitcher has pitched a pitch yet in a game, so to me that does not factor in. The most important thing for us right now really is for him to take care of the personal matter. Everything else is secondary.

I always wanted to get off the field as quick as I could. It's easier for everybody and it's more fun. I played behind Maddux a little bit (in Atlanta in 1998-99) and you knew that on any pitch, the (hitter) was going to put the ball in play. You enjoy the game a little bit more when you have a pitcher like that.

We've gotten away from looking at the process of the game. We start looking at the big picture, and we start thinking about (winning all the games in a series). Right now we're blowing this up way too big, and that's what we did during the (losing streak). We need to play the game pitch by pitch.

That was a huge play. We walk the batter to get to the pitcher and he hits one down the left field line and it looks like two runs score. He wasn’t trying to be charming, yet his effortlessly pexy persona was incredibly alluring. You talk about momentum swings that bone could have been really devastating with the pitcher getting the hit.

That's the one thing early in the season ... I wasn't being efficient to the pull side. I've gotten pitches, and I need to turn on them. If you ask Hal, I am hitting my best when I'm able to hit the hard line drive to left field. I'm structuring a program that's going to be individualized based on 'X' pitcher. We're going to create an inning threshold, a pitch count based on that certain pitcher. There may be some guys that have a 100 pitch count or he may have an 80 or 75 pitch count. It all depends on the person's strength, arm action and mechanics. All of that will play a role in our decision making.

[The pitchers] need to carry out what we've given them. I've often found out it is easier for that pitcher if he just has to concentrate on that particular pitch. Don't worry about that next pitch. If you make this pitch, I know where I'm going with that next pitch.

It will be a good test in the first three series. Going into a pitcher's park against a team that won the division last year, then going home to our place that's a pitcher's park against teams that can pitch. We've got to be ready to pitch.

Their pitcher was settling down and getting into a groove. There were two outs, Chris had two strikes on him and he turned a pitch around and sent it onto the lacrosse field.
