As a blind voter, I'm strongly opposed to the paperless e-voting machines that the NFB is trying to force onto us. I want a voting system that is accessible to as many voters as possible and that also produces an audit trail. The paperless machines are simply the wrong approach, and I support the County's efforts to try to find a better way.

Voting should go quickly once people learn how to use the touch screen. It's better in a whole lot of ways than printed ballots. An election can be certified in two days. It should also minimize recounts. The old paper ballot machines would sometimes miscount the ballot and sometimes two ballots would go through instead of one. The touch screen will leave a paper audit trail and recover everything each voter does.

The unintended consequence of a (paper trail) mandate could diminish, rather than enhance, voter confidence.

Dealers have to disclose things that private individuals don't. With individuals, there is less of a paper trail, less verification and less regulation.

Although I personally feel quite comfortable with the machines at this point, I know that many in our community want to have that added comfort of having that paper trail.

We see fundamental security and reliability issues built into these electronic machines. The point is, that if there is a vulnerability to hackers, the only way to assure that the numbers come out right is to be able to do a recount that's dependent upon a paper trail.

While a report may say one thing, you've got to have the proofs, the evidence, the contracts, the paperwork, the expenditures -- a paper trail. The federal certification process for voting machines is broken, sadly, when it comes to security. It was designed for the era of mechanical machines, and it hasn't kept up.

We're given a deadline that's an arbitrary date to replace our machines when we didn't have any problems with our voting machines last time. They worked fine. And now, they are going to be absolutely useless.

And the Commission admits to concerns that voter ID requirements could disenfranchise eligible voters, adversely affect minorities, or be used to monitor voting behaviors are 'serious and legitimate.' Moreover, the REAL ID Act turns drivers' licenses into de facto national IDs by forcing states to link their DMV databases so that drivers' personal data will instantly be available to a wide range of state, local, and federal officials. Once created, history has shown that law enforcement, employers, landlords, credit agencies, mortgage brokers, and direct mailers will find a way to access, and in all likelihood abuse, those databases.
